The Composite Materials Technology program at Palomar College prepares students to work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, sporting goods, and parts assembly. This program introduces basic composite materials, techniques, and procedures and progresses through advanced composite skills. Students will demonstrate industry standards concerning safety, composite terminology, hand lay-ups, and composite inspection and repair. Students who complete this program will be prepared for entry-level employment as composite technicians and composite repair technicians.
20 - 30 completions per year
To provide a high-quality and hands-on program to fill the need for trained professionals in the Composites Manufacturing and Repair sectors. Skills students will obtain include:
· Practice problem-solving skills
· Understand the theory of lamination.
· Apply tooling and mold methods.
· Understand resin-to-fiber content ratio.
· Demonstrate composite manufacturing techniques
· Demonstrate composite repair techniques
Palomar has revised this narrative and is resubmitting.
Last year, several companies in the San Diego Regional area approached colleges to implement a Composites certificate/degree, based on curriculum created on a grant by Davis Technical College in Utah. Palomar decided to develop the curriculum and align it with our existing Machining program. The LMI that was developed for us--and provided in the first submission attempt--did not show strong demand. However, we are submitting a new LMI report that includes a couple of SOC Codes that include the Aerospace industry that backed this certificate, and it does show strong demand. We were unable to get formal employer letters before the Dec. 23 date, but we are including the second LMI report and an email the Dean received this year outlining the need described above, and the Advisory Council minutes that also show a vote was taken and the employer partners in the Council support this program.
The job market for Composite technicians and repair personnel requires this knowledge and experience, there is strong need in the aerospace industry, and Palomar would be the only institute in North County to provide this education and training.

MiraCosta College supports given the skills required for positions may be obtained at Palomar in lieu of the high school minimum requirement typically required (or enhancement of the high school diploma).

Palomar College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with a new program and supports a program modification because 1) a supply gap exists in the region; 2) entry-level and median earnings for these occupations are above the living wage; and 3) no institution supplies awards for these occupations. The region should note that employers typically only require a high school diploma or equivalent as the minimum requirement for Composite occupations.

Palomar supports this program. We had additional support from Ruishan Chow that I will share at the meeting, providing background. We also have added a better LMI showing regional need and a letter from an employer. The Advisory Council also strongly endorsed this (I could not get all the documents to load, but can share copies in our meeting if asked). Thank you!
