The BI – Medical Billing Specialist Certificate of Achievement prepares students for entry-level medical office support positions in a variety of different medical environment. After successful completion of the BI Medical Billing Specialist Certificate of Achievement, students may seek employment as medical office clerks, medical billers in hospitals, clinics and private practice medical offices.

The BI (Business Information) Medical Certificate of Achievement provides our students with skills to perform in one the most on demand industries in the Coachella Valley. The idea is to prepare students with practical, career-oriented skills for professional medical office environments. The technologies in these office environments are a lot more specialized than just any regular office and students need to be prepared to use current industry specialized technologies. In addition to information systems and general applications skills, students receive hands-on experience in the fundamentals of business communications, medical specialized technology and medical billing procedures. In addition, students are guided through medical office accounting basics, which will provide skills specific to the entry-level positions in a medical office environments.
Upon successful completion of the BI – Medical Billing Specialist Certificate of Achievement, students should be able to: demonstrate computer literacy with respect to computer hardware and software applications, apply standard rules of business conduct and customer service, develop basic medical knowledge, use specialized billing software to perform billing tasks, apply written communication skills in various business and office environments, and design modify, query and manipulate lists (database and information in workbooks using common formulas, data, and what-if scenario tools to organize and convey information).
This certificate prepares students for careers in a medical office environment. As stated in our college catalog and online, College of the Desert’s “programs and services contribute to the success, learning and achievement of our diverse students and the vitality of the Desert Community College District, surrounding areas, and beyond.” The program results in a versatile certification that allows the student to train for a new job or maintain their current job in one of the many medical offices in the Coachella Valley.Some of these office allow their employees to work from home if desired. The business skills allow the student to combine their knowledge of computer literacy with medical billing procedures and effectively look for job opportunities. The course content is current and offered in short-term,affordable completion pathways, and is designed both for entry-level workforce and career advancement.
