Students interested in environmental studies, sustainability, natural resources, and related fields will be interested in this certificate. Students may be employed by businesses and governmental agencies that require a knowledge of techniques for storage, treatment, transport, and disposal of hazardous materials; a basic understanding of the chemical and biological phenomena which underlie environmental protection; and an understanding of environmental health and safety. Attaining a certificate will prepare students to enter careers in water conservation, watershed management, and water resources and groundwater.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
1. Identify, describe, and define the basic principles of wastewater and collection systems and of conventional wastewater treatment plants.
2. Compare and contrast a specified number of resource recovery/alternative treatment methods.
3. Be able to pass the California licensure examination in the water industry.
