Emergency Medical Technician

Emergency Medical Technicians are practitioners who respond to emergencies before a patient reaches a hospital, rendering basic medical treatment before and during transport to a medical facility. Classroom, and clinical training prepares Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) to assess and treat a wide variety of medical emergencies. The knowledge, skills and experience gained through a one semester program allows students to meet requirements of the California EMS Authority and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the National Registry EMT certifying examination and qualify for a California State EMT certification to become an Emergency Medical Technician. If you enjoy helping people in dynamic situations and want to use your skills to get patients through difficult situations, the EMT Program may be right for you. This program is also a great choice for students looking to take the first step to many other career paths, such as becoming a paramedic, firefighter, physician’s assistant, Nurse or ER tech.

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

• Demonstrate and confirm knowledge of current industry standards by successfully completing all course requirements and successfully passing the certifying written examination of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
• Demonstrate effective and clear communication skills required for patient care, completing critical skills and incident management, using both verbal and written medical summarizations.
• Demonstrate ability to perform a primary assessment on a medical or trauma patient, manage a simulated emergency scenario, and determine the appropriate critical care interventions.
• Determine the role of legal, ethical, and professional standards of conduct within the Emergency Medical Services and other health care professions.
• Demonstrate proficiency of all required practical skills as mandated to qualify for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Certification and for EMT and EMR licensing with the State of California.
