The Glendale Community College Paramedic program is constructed to ready individuals to work as advanced level prehospital care providers in a multitude of arenas with knowledge of the paramedic profession, proficiency in the use of basic and advanced level skills, ability to apply sound theoretical rationale, all while utilizing intellectual ability to understand disease processes as the basis for decision making and ultimately success in the workplace. The program promotes integration of the paramedic skill set with competence in communication, mathematics, and problem-solving skills. A student who completes the program is eligible for a Course Completion Certificate or an associate degree in Paramedic Studies.
Entry into the program requires the candidate to be a current California certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for 1,000 hours as a full time EMT. They must also hold a current AHA (American Heart Association) Healthcare Provider BLS (Basic Life Support) Card. Upon completion of the program, the student can take the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician) paramedic licensing exam. The course enrollment will be limited to 15.
At the completion of the program the student shall:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate professional and compassionate communication during contact with patients, bystanders, coworkers, and other health care providers.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to be a team leader or team member with the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills necessary for an advanced level EMS provider.
3. Students will demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary to integrate paramedic concepts learned through this program, in all emergency situations.
4. Students will be able to analyze patient information obtained through interview, assessment, and/or report to list potential differential diagnoses.
Student learning outcomes:
1. Students will be able to identify anatomical structures and major body systems.
2. Students will apply effective clinician skills in providing comprehensive and knowledge care to all patients.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate paramedic skills proficiency.
We plan on an initial enrollment of 15 students and project all 15 will complete the course to earn the certificate of completion. 3 students are projected to complete the degree.
The Glendale Community College Paramedic Program's goal is to give the students the ability to apply for a job with a livable wage. They will also be able to continue at Glendale Community College to complete the AAS in Health Sciences. Completing our program and becoming a Certified Paramedic in the state of California will allow the student to fulfill a career goal and open many opportunities for them.
The student will enter the program with a valid California EMT card, a current AHA CPR card, have taken anatomy and physiology as prerequisites. The student will have to have been in the field as a working EMT for a minimum of 1,000 hours. Once accepted into the program, the student will take all 9 courses in succession with the goal of finishing their internship in the summer. Once complete this will allow the student to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam. After passing the exam they are eligible to apply for the Paramedic card in the state of California.
