Students completing this program will be well-informed of physical, chemical, and biological principles and processes of plants and soils. Mastering these principles allow the selection of effective programs of plant development, irrigation, fertility, pest management, and soil management. Completion of the program prepares students for careers in management of tree, vine, vegetable, and field crops; for transfer into California State University and University of California institutions; and entry-level technical positions in the production agriculture industry.
Purpose: To provide practical knowledge and specific skills in plant and soil sciences as required in vineyard, orchard, vegetable, and field crop management systems.
Anticipated number of annual completers: 15
To providepractical knowledge and specific skills in plant and soil sciences as requiredin vineyard, orchard, vegetable, and field crop management systems whichprepares completers for entry level technical positions in the productionagriculture industry.
Note: This program was approved in the 1970s and there is no documentation. Regional Consortium endorsement is required befor program can be updated in COCI.
As do all instructional programs on the Reedley College campus, the Plant and SoilScience Program participates in a regular program review process.
In addition to utilizing the program reviewprocess for program improvement, the program meets with an industry-basedadvisory committee to discuss industry/workplace needs and the enhancement ofinstructional programs to facilitate those needs. Discussions often focus on specific skillsets desired by employers as well as current industry trends and issues withwhich students must be familiar upon program completion.
