This Associate Degree will prepare students for an entry-level position in the human services/social work field and for career advancement for those already employed in these occupations. Jobs may include case management, caregiver, advocate, and activities coordinator. Students learn the skills and knowledge necessary to potentially transfer to upper division programs in social work or human services and to be employed at the paraprofessional, entry level in social work and human services agencies.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
• Demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse population to resolve chronic and crisis issues that are likely to have a detrimental impact on the health and well-being of families and the community.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge and skills required of a Social Work professional.
The department expects 10 students to graduate with the degree annually.
The Social Work program prepares students for careers in the helping professions, and will enhance the skills of persons already employed in this field. In addition, students will be provided with several personal/interpersonal skills needed to live healthy lives and deal with the stressful demands of daily living.
Students in the Social Work program interact with and provide services to the community at large. They will network with community agencies. Additionally, community agencies will interact with Long Beach City College as they provide field trip opportunities as well as employment and volunteer opportunities. Community agencies who visit the college also provide training to the students and serve as members of our advisory committee.
