This is a new program and there is no data to compare. However, we anticipate high enrollment, especially within the greater Long Beach community. We hope to have 25 completers per year
Includes course requirements and sequencing that reflect program goals. In addition, upon completing the barbering courses (BARB201through BARB207) 31.5 units or at least 1,000 clocked hours, students are prepared to take and pass the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam to become licensed barbers.
The Barber program consists of a minimum of 1000 hours of training (31.5 units) to provide entry level skills to students who desire a career in the barbering profession. Students will develop expertise in the science and techniques of hair and skin and lab experience in barbering. Upon completion, the student is eligible to take the California State Board examination to become a licensed Barber. The program meets the labor market and educational needs of students and professionals seeking employment in the Barbering and Cosmetology industry. This certificate of achievement will provide opportunities for employment as a barber stylist, product sales, platform artist, salon manager, entrepreneur, business owner, and or educator. Long Beach City College is committed to ensuring short-term credit CTE courses and certificates are offered to underrepresented students in the greater Long Beach community. With those parameters in mind, creating this certificate fulfills the goals listed on the LBCC Planning website. We are also working on securing the classroom/ lab space with VP Dr. Douglas. The alternative would be to offer this program at a satellite location or portable. Then, after the renovation of the B building, one Barber lab would be specified for this program. Moreover, the program will require one full-time faculty member and at least two adjunct faculty members. Also, we will be using Adult Ed money and Strong Workforce money to secure the necessary equipment and supplies.
Equity: Long Beach City College will provide equitable access and support to its diverse students and will improve educational progress and achievement, especially for students under-represented in those outcomes.
Community: The College will strengthen its internal and external community relations to promote efficient student pathways to academic and career success and to strengthen local economic and workforce development.
