This 600-hour Esthetics Program prepares students for California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licensure. In this curriculum, students study theoretical understanding and knowledge as it relates to basic sciences and esthetics practices; perform hands-on manipulative skills as demonstrated on clients in CSM’s skincare treatment lab, while strictly adhering to the California State Board of Cosmetology’sHealth and Safety rules, laws, and regulations; identify the many career opportunities associated with esthetics; and prepare for employment in the esthetics industry by gaining relevant entry level and some advanced skills.
We anticipate an enrollment of approximately 40 students in the first academic year
for the Certificate of Achievement in Esthetics. Of those, based on historic persistence rates, we expect at least 30 students will apply for the certificate each academic year.
Upon completion of certificate requirements, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of skin care treatments, skin care products, and electrical facial modalities and devices. They will also be able to recognize skin disorders and diseases, common skin conditions, and causes of excessive hair growth, as well as determine whether clients can receive skin care services from a licensed skin care specialist or should be referred to a dermatologist. Students will perform skin care services safely, following the California State Board of Cosmetology’s health and safety rules, laws, and regulations. They will expertly explain advanced skin care treatments, identify how to safely use chemical exfoliations and peels, and understand lash and brow tinting, perming, and their applications. The certificate will also prepare students for the California State Board of Cosmetology’s written esthetician exam, help them identify career opportunities, and prepare them for employment in the skin care industry.
To earn a Certificate of Achievement in Esthetics, students must complete 20specified units, respectively, that prepare them for entry-level jobs, such as Esthetician, skin care specialist, makeup artist, hair removal technician, cosmetic product developer, and independent contractor with all skills developed in the program
