The Dance program offers lower-division preparation for students who plan to transfer to pursue a bachelor's degree in dance or a dance related field, earn an associate degree, or pursue a certificate for employment. It also provides opportunities for those in other fields to combine interests and/or learn about how to prevent injuries, reduce stress, improve quality of life, and develop a technique for any movement-based undertaking. The Dance curriculum includes technique courses in ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, tap dance, musical theater dance, ballroom and Latin dance, hip hop, Pacific Island dance, Middle Eastern dance, Afro-Cuban dance, and an introductory course that includes a variety of world dance styles. It also includes General Education courses such as Dance History, Dance Appreciation, Dance on Film, and Dance Cultures of the World, along with Pilates, choreography, and Dance as a Profession courses. There are many opportunities for students of all levels and interests to perform by enrolling in one of the performing groups. Participation in formal concerts is by audition and enrollment in one of the performance courses or ensembles. Anyone wishing to complete an AA in Dance or the Dance Instructor Certificate should seek the continuing guidance of the dance faculty in conjunction with a MiraCosta College Counselor.

ยท The Associate Degree in Dance is designed for students who are preparing to audition for admission into a dance program at a four-year institution or for those wanting to pursue dance as a career. The major concentrates on developing the student's technical ability to at the intermediate or advanced level in modern dance, ballet, and jazz dance. Students also complete courses in choreography, dance as a profession, dance general education courses, and ensemble work in dance rehearsal and performance to develop their awareness of the artistry and rigor of dance. To fulfill the unit requirement for the major, students may choose among courses in tap, hip hop,various world dance courses, and/or Latin or ballroom dance.

MiraCosta college submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with caution when developing a program because wages are below the living wage, but supports a program modification because 1) a supply gap exists and 2) a high number of annual job openings exist.
