This Certificate will support teachers and paraprofessionals working with children with special needs and/or Early Intervention Programs in both public and private programs. Understanding of the diagnosis of exceptionalities, family and cultural influences, common therapies and acommodations and modifications for learning will be addressed.
Program Learning Outcomes – Upon completion, students will be able to:
• Apply professional standards of practice to the care and education of young children and their families in early childhood settings with an emphasis in children with special needs.
The special education classes (CH DEV 44, CH DEV 45), currently enroll approximately 28 students per semester. Most take both courses. These classes as of now, do not have ties to a specific certificate or degree. The courses are electives in our degree, and are specializations for the master teacher permit through the State of CA. If tied to a specific certificate, as proposed, it is anticipated a majority of the current 28 students would complete the requirements of a special education certificate.
Program Learning Outcomes – Upon completion, students will be able to:
• Apply professional standards of practice to the care and education of young children and their families in early childhood settings with an emphasis in children with special needs.
This 19 unit certificate will provide a clear pathway for students interested in supporting children with exceptionalities.
Students will develop the skills necessary to support children with special needs in a variety of settings. Students will understand the Federal legislation and laws which protect the rights of, and govern the education of individuals with disabilities. Students will understand family dynamics such as culture and history, and will develop the skills to interact with the families, and present material in ways that are accessible to the individual with a disability.
There is a high demand for teachers and assistants to work with children with exceptionalities in the private, as well as the public sectors.
Employment ranges from home visitation and behavioral and play support through the CA Regional Centers, to employment in the public schools and in the private settings.
Employment in the field of exceptionalities pays well, offers flexibility and has pathways through the PhD level.
