Community Health Worker
Certificate of Achievement
Community Health Workers (CHW's) are members of the community who work either for pay or as volunteers in association with the local health care systems. CHW's usually share ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, and life experiences with the community members they serve. CHW's go by many titles, such as community health advisors, lay health advocates, promotoras, outreach educators, community health representatives, peer health promoters, and peer health educators.
Career Opportunities:
Positions include but are not limited to interpretation and translation services, provide culturally appropriate health education and information, help people get the care they need, give informal counseling, guidance on health behaviors and advocate for individual and community health needs. The Community Health Worker Certificate is a one semester 16-18 credit Certificate of Achievement
Program Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to implement health education plans to promote healthy behaviors, address health risks, and reduce harm.
2. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to facilitate clients access to health resources and ability to navigate the healthcare system.
3. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to apply the code of ethics required within the health education field.
4. Upon the successful completion of the program, the student will be able to apply cultural competency principles in dealing with people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Program Requirements:
PBHSB20 Introduction to Public Health (3 units)
PBHSB21 Contemporary Health (3 units)
PBHS B22 Drugs, Health and Society (3 units)
PBHSB23 Health and Social Justice (3 units)
COMMB9 Health Communication (3 units)
PBHSB48WE Occupations Work Experience/Internship (1-3 units)
To achieve the Job Certificate of Achievement upon completion of the following courses with at least a ‘C or P’ grade in each course, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement
30 students per academic year and 27 annual completions.
